Gubacsi Bridge Closes for 24 Hours on 27 September: Csepel Buses Diverted

1. What closes, and for how long

BKK says Gubacsi road bridge will be closed across its full width from 00:01 on Sunday 27 September 2026 until midnight. For drivers, taxis and buses, that removes the direct road connection between Csepel and Pesterzsébet for the entire day rather than just a short overnight works window.

The closure is deliberately scheduled as a 24-hour block because crews are reinstalling bridge-bearing elements that were removed in August and refurbished. BKK notes that some of the work takes place below the bridge and that concrete needs curing time, so periods with little visible activity do not mean the closure has finished early.

2. Drivers must use Kvassay Bridge or the southern M0

Motor traffic travelling to or from Csepel will need to use Kvassay Bridge or, farther south, the M0 motorway's Deák Ferenc Bridge. The practical impact depends on where the journey starts: Kvassay Bridge is the main city detour, while the M0 can make more sense for trips already approaching from southern Budapest or beyond.

This is a significant diversion for a local cross-Danube journey, so residents with appointments, airport transfers or fixed work start times should allow more margin than the normal route suggests. BKK specifically recommends leaving earlier when arrival time matters.

3. Five bus routes are diverted via Közvágóhíd

Buses 35, 36, 148 and 151, plus night bus 948, will run on diversion via Kvassay Bridge and Közvágóhíd. BKK says the detour will add more than 10 minutes to journeys between Csepel and Pesterzsébet, so the timetable experience will be noticeably different even if your usual bus number still appears in journey planners.

Routes 35, 36 and 948 will not serve Sósfürdő in Pesterzsébet during the diversion. They will instead stop at Közvágóhíd at the stop used by bus 179. Routes 148 and 151 also skip Sósfürdő, and on the Csepel side they will not serve Papírgyár or Védgát utca; they also use the bus 179 stop at Közvágóhíd.

4. Bus 119 gets longer hours and more frequent service

BKK is extending the operating period of bus 119 and running it more frequently so Sósfürdő retains a useful public-transport connection while the bridge routes are displaced. That compensating service matters particularly for passengers who would otherwise lose their closest stop when routes 35, 36, 148, 151 and 948 bypass the area.

Because temporary service patterns can be adjusted operationally, check BudapestGO or BKK Info shortly before departure rather than relying on an old screenshot or saved route. If you need an accessible connection or a precise interchange at Közvágóhíd, allow extra time for the unfamiliar transfer.

5. Walking and cycling use the railway bridge

BKK says pedestrians and cyclists can use the neighbouring Gubacsi railway bridge under the current traffic arrangements while the road bridge is closed. The road closure therefore does not remove every local crossing option, but people should follow the signed route and any on-site instructions rather than trying to enter the closed road bridge.

For visitors staying outside central Budapest, the key point is that this disruption is in the southern districts rather than the inner-city sightseeing core. It can still matter if your accommodation, family visit, event or onward journey takes you through Csepel or Pesterzsébet.

6. More bridge works are expected from October

The 27 September closure is one stage of a broader repair programme. BKK says expansion joints are expected to be replaced from October, with night-time half-width road closures planned. The exact dates and traffic arrangements for those later works will be announced separately.

That means Sunday's full closure has a clear end, but the corridor will not necessarily return to a completely work-free pattern for the rest of autumn. Anyone who uses the bridge regularly should keep an eye on fresh BKK notices rather than treating 27 September as the final intervention.
