1. What changes from 10:00 on 21 September
BKK says crews are replacing the expansion-joint structures at the two Buda-side exit ramps from Erzsébet Bridge. The work also includes drainage and pavement repairs around the joints. It starts at 10:00 on Monday 21 September 2026 and is expected to continue until 15 November.
This is not a closure of Erzsébet Bridge itself. The important detail is which exit you normally use after crossing from Pest to Buda: the Rudas Baths branch closes completely, the Attila út/Krisztinaváros branch remains open in one lane, and the Hegyalja út branch keeps its normal arrangement.
2. The Rudas Baths exit is fully closed
The exit towards Rudas Gyógyfürdő is closed across its full width from 10:00. Traffic heading towards Szent Gellért tér must leave the bridge towards Attila út instead, then detour via Szarvas tér, Krisztina körút and Szent Gellért rakpart.
That matters to visitors because Rudas Baths sits immediately below the bridge on the Buda riverfront. A route that looks extremely short on a map can take longer once the ramp closure and city traffic are added, so allow extra time for a timed bath entry, restaurant booking or onward connection.
3. Six bus routes use the diversion
BKK lists buses 7, 107, 907, 933, 933A and 941 on the diverted route. These services also stop at Döbrentei tér at the stop used by bus 5, and at Rudas Gyógyfürdő they use the stop beside the cliff.
The diversion affects both everyday riders and travellers using the corridor between central Pest and south Buda. Check BudapestGO or BKK Info shortly before departure, especially at night, because the list includes night services as well as daytime routes.
4. The Attila út exit stays open — but only one lane
The Attila út exit towards Krisztinaváros is also under construction from 10:00 on 21 September, but it remains passable in one lane. Drivers should expect slower merging and queuing at busy times.
BKK also flags one planned overnight exception: on the night of 5–6 October, the Attila út exit is expected to close completely. During that overnight closure, the Rudas Baths branch is planned to reopen temporarily so traffic still has a Buda-side route off the bridge.
5. The Hegyalja út exit is unaffected
BKK says there is no restriction on the exit towards Hegyalja út. It continues under the normal traffic arrangement.
That distinction is useful when planning a taxi or car route: the works affect two specific Buda exit branches, not every direction at the western end of Erzsébet Bridge.
6. Practical planning for residents and visitors
If you are walking or using public transport, the bridge remains an important cross-Danube link, but bus stop positions and road congestion around Döbrentei tér and Rudas can change how long the last part of the trip takes. Follow the live stop information rather than an old screenshot.
If you are driving or taking a taxi from Pest to Rudas Baths, Gellért Hill or the riverside south of the bridge, leave more margin than usual. For airport, rail or timed-attraction connections, the safest approach is to check BKK Info immediately before departure because works and temporary traffic management can evolve.
7. What the work actually fixes
The project is not simply resurfacing. BKK says the expansion-joint structures at the ends of the ramps are being replaced, with drainage and pavement repaired around them at the same time.
Expansion joints allow bridge structures to move safely with temperature and load changes. For travellers the engineering detail is less important than the duration: this is a multi-week works programme, not a one-morning closure.
